Welcome Halloween, Week 6 Harry Potter

DIY Sorting Hat

I don't know many kids that don't like Harry Potter,

these sorting hats are so cute to make and would be fun

to place around for decoration.

What you'll need:

a plain paper mache witch hat

newspaper

hot glue

modeling paste (decoart is great)

brown/tan craft satin paint

paint brush

The post I found to make this said they found the paper

mache hat at Michaels. I am sure you can get online and

find one somewhere.

Your first step is to add the basic features using

newspaper and hot glue. This part does not have to be

perfect or even pretty looking; the newspaper just makes

the face 3D and gives you some depth to work with.

You will go over the newspaper later with modeling paste,

which will smooth everything out, so don't worry if there

are weird folds, seams or sharp corners in your newspaper.

As long as your hat starts to look like a sorting hat once

the newspaper is glued on you're good to go.

For the eyebrows start with a rectangular piece of newspaper

about 8x6" and fold it up into a long skinny line. Bend the

newspaper into two arches (kinda like an upside down w) and

then use your hot glue gun to attach the newspaper to the hat.

Remember you will be smoothing everything out later.

For the nose and mouth, take the newspaper and make a flat

ball and glue it where his nose should be. Then glue on 2 smaller,

flatter balls on either side of the nose to make cheekbones

to make the upper lip look beaky. Cover the beak with a few

long strips of newspaper to give it a flat, smooth surface.

Make sure to cover the underside of the beak as well.

Make the bottom lip by gluing another long folded strip

of newspaper underneath the beak. This part doesn't need

to be nearly as three dimensional as the upper beak, so you

can get away with just a single strip of folded newspaper.

Once your newspaper is in place, add modeling paste to cover

the newspaper and smooth out all the seams. Just use your

fingers to apply the modeling paste and smooth it all out.

Cover all the pieces of the newspaper with a thin layer of

paste and start smoothing out the seams between strips

of newspaper. Fill in the gaps between the newspaper

and the hat with modeling paste and smooth those out as

well so there's a seamless transition between the paper mache

of the original hat and the extra newspaper features.

Once the gaps are filled in and mostly smoothed out, set the

hat aside and let it dry overnight. On the next day go over

everything with the molding paste again. This time you can let

dry for just 2 hours. Then give your hat a coat of paint.

You will need more than one coat. Then let dry again overnight

and now you have your own sorting hat.

Now for your treat....Homemade Butterbeer

What you'll need:

vanilla ice cream

butterscotch syrup

cream soda

ice

some type of serving cup

Create:

Place all ingredients together in a blender. Blend until smooth,

if needed add more ice to create desired consistency.

Top it off with more butterscotch.

This makes one butterbeer.

Now sit back and start your marathon.

Fall Simmering Potpourri

I love the smell of fall, I even like fall itself.  I just don't like what follows... winter!  However I love walking in my home and smelling  the fall scents that are so warm and inviting. Making this simmering potpourri is extremely easy! What you'll need: Tangerine or orange peels Cloves Cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon Vanilla extract Pumpkin pie spice Water Small crockpot, saucepan or tea kettle You can choose how much you want to put in  of what, there really is no magic amount. I normally put  in more of my favorite scents. If using a tea kettle  or a sauce pan keep in mind you will have to keep  adding water to it. If you use a crockpot you  will not have to keep adding water and you can keep  it on even when you're asleep. Some other ideas that you can add are: Apple juice (instead of water) Cranberries Nutmeg Anise (one of my favorites) Dried fruit Coffee beans Have you ever made a simmering potpourri pot?  What do you normal...
