Exercise for bariatric surgery patients is often the first part of a patient's long-term plan to get skipped following surgery. In reality, its just about as important as your diet!
There are 3 main activities that you should regularly take part in.
Follow an appropriate bariatric diet plan!
Actively participate in weight loss surgery support groups!
Follow a consistent and progressive exercise routine.
Two of the three are easier to do...
1. If you don't follow your diet plan, you can get sick, you can stretch your stomach back out over time and you won't lose the weight that you could be losing if you properly ate.
2. Participating in weight loss surgery support groups is the next easiest thing to do to help you through the hard parts and also keep you accountable.
3. Not surprisingly, exercise seems to be the harder because you may not like it, you get tired of doing it, your too tired to go before work or after, etc.
You must make working out a PRIORITY, for two good reasons!
You will lose more weight & the benefits to your physical and mental health are marvelous!
Not convinced? A study was done to compare the weight loss of gastric bypass surgery patients, who did moderately intense physical activity for a minimum of 2 1/2 hours a week against patients that did not.
6 months after surgery 5.5% greater excess weight loss {56.0% vs. 50.5%}
12 months after surgery 5.7% greater excess weight loss {67.4% vs. 61.7%}
