10 Grocery Savings Tips

Below are some great tips to help you save money when it's time to do your grocery shopping!

Keep a Price Log:

Monitor the costs of groceries you buy regularly by jotting them down in a notebook. You can see how often things go on sale and plan accordingly.

Time Things Right:

Most grocery stores sales cycles being on Wednesday. Avoid the first 2 days of the month, some stores raise their prices on those days. Consider shopping after 4pm when you might be able to nab half priced goods Know the best time of the year to buy things that can be frozen or stored in your pantry. Turkey prices are slashed after holidays, while cereal manufacturers often offer deals during back to school.

Rely on a Few Good Apps:

Want coupons for items you buy regularly? Use Grocery IQ to find them and load them onto your savings card. Use Grocery Pal to determine weather the store you've input has the best deals and it lets you know which stores do! Tap on Berrycart which is a rebate platform dedicated to organic, gluten free and non-GMO items for more than 100,000 stores!

Know where to Shop for What:

Supermarkets don't always have the best deals. Milk is a loss leader at drugstores, so it can be 20 percent cheaper there than at the grocery store. Similarly you can find lower prices on fish and meat at warehouse clubs and canned goods and boxed goods at big box stores. Shop for your cleaning products and paper goods at dollar stores.

Take Full Advantage of Your Loyalty Card:

Each time you sign up for a new card visit the store's website to find out what other benefits are available. Be sure to fill out the form requesting your snail mail address, email address or both so you'll be sent coupons.

Hit the Stores Alone:

Sometimes taking your kids or your husband raises your grocery bill because they are picking out items that wasn't on your list, so go alone!

Befriend the Butcher:

Ask him which days he puts out the quick sale items, snap them up and freeze them for later. When the cheaper roasts go on sale have him grind one into hamburger meat and you could save up to $2.50 a pound.

Beware the Deli Counter:

You often can do better shopping elsewhere in the grocery store for deli items. For instance American cheese might cost up to 30% more at the deli counter than in the dairy case.

Consider Frozen over Fresh:

The nutritional value is similar and when fresh fruits and veggies are out of season, frozen produce is better for both flavor and price!

Don't Let One Good Deal Drive You:

Just because one item is on sale, don't base a whole meal around that item unless you are watching prices of the other items. You can buy the one item that is on sale and hold onto it for the next week when something could be on sale to go with last weeks item!

Fall Simmering Potpourri

I love the smell of fall, I even like fall itself.  I just don't like what follows... winter!  However I love walking in my home and smelling  the fall scents that are so warm and inviting. Making this simmering potpourri is extremely easy! What you'll need: Tangerine or orange peels Cloves Cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon Vanilla extract Pumpkin pie spice Water Small crockpot, saucepan or tea kettle You can choose how much you want to put in  of what, there really is no magic amount. I normally put  in more of my favorite scents. If using a tea kettle  or a sauce pan keep in mind you will have to keep  adding water to it. If you use a crockpot you  will not have to keep adding water and you can keep  it on even when you're asleep. Some other ideas that you can add are: Apple juice (instead of water) Cranberries Nutmeg Anise (one of my favorites) Dried fruit Coffee beans Have you ever made a simmering potpourri pot?  What do you normal...
