Fibromyalgia and Exercise
Do you have Fibromyalgia?
Do you exercise or do you think there is no way you can exercise with
your pain? In this post you will find really good reasons as to why
you should still exercise! You don't have to do high-impact workouts
but walking daily, stretching, swimming, yoga, tai chi or pilates are
all great low-impact exercises you can do when you suffer from
Fibromyalgia!
Experts believe than when
a patient exercises and has daily activity you can actually have some
control over your fibromyalgia and the amount of pain you feel. It is
essential for keeping muscles strong and flexible along with helping
control your weight.
Exercising boosts levels
of natural endorphins, pain fighting molecules that are responsible
for the “runners high.” Endorphins help reduce anxiety, stress
and depression! Scientists have also found that low levels of
serotonin can be linked to fibromyalgia, which also leads to
aggression. When you have an increased level of serotonin you are
calmer and reduces your anxiety. Lack of exercise and inactivity can
aggravate low serotonin levels.
If you have fibromyalgia
and you want to start exercising, it is really important to start
slowly! Begin with stretching exercises and then gently low-imapct
activity like walking, swimming or bicycling. Remember muscle
soreness is usual when first starting an exercise regimen. You should
however avoid running, jogging and excessive weight training before
talking to your doctor.
